One of the most famous pilots of the Grumman TBF/TBM Avenger torpedo bomber of the US Navy in World War II was George Herbert Walker Bush who would later become the 41st President of the United States of America. George Bush joined the US Navy following graduation at the age of 18 and after 20 months of aviator training, he was commissioned as an Ensign in the US Navy reserves just before his 19th birthday making him the youngest Navy Aviator at that time. In late 1943 he was assigned to Torpedo Squadron 51 (VT-51), part of Air Group 51, and was based on the light aircraft carrier USS San Jacinto CVL-30.
