Often referred to as "Monty" General Montgomery (1887-1976) successfully commanded Allied forces at the Battle of El Alamein, a major turning point in World War II, and his troops were the main reason for the expulsion of the Axis forces from North Africa. Later in his career he was a prominent commander in Italy and North-West Europe, where he was in command of all Allied ground forces during Operation Overlord and then until after the Battle of Normandy.
