Although a formidable weapon the Ferdinand suffered from several design faults. To solve some of the issues the Ferdinand suffered during the Kursk offensive, several modifications were introduced including the installation of an MG34 machine gun in the hull, a commander's cupola and mantlet. The modified Ferdinand’s were then renamed Elefants. The added improvements to the basic design created an extremely advanced and powerful defensive weapon with enormous firepower.
