The signature bent wing design was initially construed as a compromise to accommodate the big engine, a big propeller to maximize the engine output, and short carrier capable landing gear. The bent wing solved all the problems and as an unknown bi-product, it actually increased capable airspeed. The Corsair was primarily assigned to the Marines in the Pacific, most noteworthy of which was Colonel Pappy Boyington's "Black Sheep Squadron".
