In July of 1956 British European Airways sought a medium haul jet. The winning design was submitted by de Havilland for the DH121, a tri-jet seating between 97 and 103 passengers. When de Havilland merged with Hawker Siddeley in 1959, the DH 121 became known as the Trident 1. The first Trident 1 took to the skies 9th January 1962 and entered service in 1964. The 2E variant had a longer wingspan, more fuel capacity and greater range than the 1E. The 2E first took to the skies on 27th July 1967.
